The Design
The reverse design showcases the American Bison depicted in a left-side upstanding position resembling a Buffalo, which gives the coin its moniker.
The inscriptions included on this side start with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arching over the buffalo and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
A second motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” lies near the Buffalo’s muzzle, while the coin’s denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content read “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD” is at the bottom rim.
The Native American Chief’s right profile on the obverse design is inspired by the Indian Head Nickel coin, created by James Earle Fraser in 1913.
The Chief’s portrait combines traces of Native American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. The word “LIBERTY” is inscribed on the front of the Native’s forehead, the year of issuance and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials, are on the lower left.
