The Philharmonic Design
Thomas Pesendorfer designed the Philharmonic Coins Series inspired by the Viena Orchestra. Both sides portray essential elements of the Orchestra.
The obverse depicts the pipe organ from the Golden Hall, whose original architecture dates back to 1872 under the signature of Friedrich Ladegast. Unfortunately, the room where the organ was initially settled went down during World War II, damaging the instrument. The reconstruction of the Hall and the organ in 1996 became a national symbol of resilience.
Arching over the organ, the words “Republik Oesterreich” refer to the Austrian nation, while the inscriptions beneath the image refer to the coin’s weight, metal content, year of issuance, and face value.
The reverse design comprises eight classic orchestral instruments, including violins, a cello, the Viennese horn, a bassoon, and a harp. Besides the instruments, the engravings on the upper rim correspond to the name of the Orchestra.
